Sadly, the words of U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler speak to a brutal reality. Referring to the continued effort to control guns in the hands of law abiding citizens on MSNBC, Rep. Nadler said, "I think we will be there if the President exploits it..."
This is expected. So, is the fact that there are bad, unstable people in the world. The system worked in preventing Adam Lanza from obtaining a rifle three days before the mass shooting in Connecticut. Staff and Dick's Sporting Goods would not sell him a weapon. It was not a tough call. He refused to wait and he refused a background check.
Young Adam, with his own set of personal issues, did what others have done since the invention of the gun...he obtained them in "other" ways.
His mother was a gun enthusiast with an understandable love for her troubled son. Sadly, she opened the door to the wrong outlet for her child. She introduced him to guns without ever considering the consequences. She missed the obvious social cues about her son's behavior and condition. She ignored them or did not see them because she saw guns (she had her own reasons for having them) as a source of bonding with her son, an outlet for his social awkwardness, clinically describe as Asperger's Syndrome.
Was this shooting preventable? Perhaps, perhaps not. If he had not had access to his mother's cache of weapons would he have found another way? It seems that the Lanza mother and son (she divorced, he one of two boys) were not financially struggling in any way, shape, or form. Perhaps, he just finds them the way weapons are found all the time...on the streets, from people who sell such things.
But, the deadly, tragic shooting has teed up the liberals and it is important to be informed and calculated in responding to this event. A simple check of facts will show that gun control leaves more people dead, not less, and it's not even debatable.
Maybe we should, in fact, be talking about training more people to properly defend themselves. It won't prevent all shootings, but it could stop them (see Oregon's recent mall shooting). Or, maybe we should be talking about the real problem plaguing America....the lack of a true north on our moral compass.
It's doubtful that dealing with our moral decay would prevent the actions of people that fall into the category of sociopath, but it would address a bucket full of woes. That's part two.
In the meantime, remember what the good Congressman said...if only the President would "exploit" the shooting. The President will oblige and a new assault on our Constitution is underway. Respond, folks...do not react.
