The question for some, not all, is...Who will you be mad at?
The choices are:
A) You
B) God
C) Me
I am betting it's the last of the three choices and the reason will be because it is easier to be angry with the messenger than to deal with the message. But, to get to the part that will incite some, you will need to read.
In this case, the Bible.
1 Samuel 8:1-22
New International Version (NIV)
Israel Asks for a King
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.
So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
Well now, what images do those words evoke?
It seems to me that God is speaking pretty clearly that expanded government leads to all manner of really bad things. There is a role for government, no doubt. God's Word speaks plainly on the subject. However, through His prophet He warns of government's reach and the outcome.
I was struck by how those words paint such a vivid picture of our country today. In Obama, we the people got the "king" we wanted, didn't we? I know what some of you are thinking - "Hey, Pres I didn't vote for the guy!" True, but what kind of nation have we allowed to grow out from under us? A nation that is morally bankrupt and lost.
Disagree? If the daily news does not convince you then you are either lost, clueless, naive, in denial, or morally bankrupt yourself. You decide.
We are at the modern day version of the "threshing floor". If you do not know what that means then look it up. It's a Biblical place of separation which brings me to where I not only step on some toes, I stamp them with the heel of my foot.
But, first a warning: Read very carefully!
Most of the people in this country believe themselves to be a Christian. Though the percentage is dropping, the concept is clear. Most of you reading this believe that you are good with God. Cool. Happy for you.
Just know this...if you are a Christian and you support the Democratic party you are in disobedience to God. You have put politics in front of your faith. Personally, I think God looks poorly upon such a world view because our world view is come through the prism of our faith.
The Democratic party believes in killing God's most remarkable creation...babies. Not fetal tissue, a child, person, human being. Additionally, the Democratic party believes in allowing marriage between those of the same sex. Sorry, but that's another no, no (at least if you are a Christian who believes in the Bible). Then, the trifecta is complete by the fact that God was not wanted in the party platform.
They had to violate party rules to squeeze Him in. Of course, I do not think God is overly concernced about that issue, but it is a reflection of the heart of the party. After-all, the Bible says, "out of the abundance of the heart; the mouth speaks." Sometimes those words are expressed in platforms or in votes by party members who expressly did not want any alliance with God. Oh, and then there's the distance the party wants from Israel ( you know, God's people?).
Now this final thought...I am NOT suggesting you ought to be a Republican, just not a Democrat. I told you that you would be mad, but if you're mad at me you have it all wrong. Take it to the Bible and take it to God. Let me know how it works out for you.
Just know this, it's never too later to make a U-turn. We all screw up and there's always mercy and grace. But, you need to acknowledge your error and head in a new direction.
