It has irritated me for years.
The shift. We have regressed as a culture and instead of singing the national anthem ("The Star-Spangled Banner") we have it "performed" for us and singing is almost nonexistent. Fewer people, young in particular, even know the words to our national song.
This is just one of those things (like the panhandlers that no longer hold signs that state "Will work for food" and now hold signage that proclaims "Hungry, God bless") that has rubbed me wrong and reveals a sad change in our culture.
As a side bar, you might be interested in knowing that the this summer (Flag Day to just past July 4th) the Smithsonian Museum of American History will have the original manuscript of The Star-Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key, on display with the flag that inspired it which flew at Fort McHenry.
For now, enjoy three very different renditions. The first is just classically cute, the second classically horrific, the third just classic.
