The body of the sixth and final victim of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has been recovered, authorities announced on Tuesday (May 7). The victim, identified as 37-year-old José Mynor López of Baltimore, was located by Unified Command salvage teams. His family has been notified of the recovery.
"With heavy hearts, today marks a significant milestone in our recovery efforts and providing closure to the loved ones of the six workers who lost their lives in this tragic event," said Col. Roland Butler, Jr., superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police.
The bridge collapsed on March 26 when a container ship, the Dali, struck one of the bridge piers. López and five other construction workers, who were filling potholes on the bridge at the time, were killed in the incident. Two other workers survived the collapse.
The other victims were identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, Carlos Daniel Hernandez Estrella, and Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed their condolences and gratitude to the recovery teams. The recovery process and the work to remove wreckage from the bridge collapse site have been challenging tasks, state and federal leaders have said.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, used by approximately 30,000 Marylanders daily, is a principal route for all hazardous materials traveling along the I-95 corridor. The state has received $60 million in emergency relief funds toward the project to rebuild the bridge.
